Although Decatur is found in the heart of Lincoln land, it boasts many of its
own unique attractions for visitors. This city was home to Hieronymus Mueller,
an inventor who changed the way we live by designing items such as the water
tap and spark plugs, and today a museum stands in honor of him. Like many towns
in central Illinois, Decatur features numerous preserved buildings dating back
as far as 1850, most notably the Homestead Prairie Farm and Millikin University.
For a change of pace, guests can check out the Scovill Zoo, which holds a variety
of fish, reptiles and mammals. Adjacent to the zoo is the Scovill Golf Course,
one of many golf courses around Decatur. There are several other green spaces
to be found in this area, including Lake Decatur, Nelson Park and the Sand Creek
Recreation Area.
